The switch would only be meaningful if passed to the SMP kernel. Either
kernel would take it but the UP kernel would just drop it on the floor.

As you've got a UP kernel I'd use that. I would have said don't bother
now that it looks like we've solved the mystery, but Rob Kearey has
suggested using the UP for production on RH 7.3 boxes. I'd take his word
for it :)
