I'm not going to attempt to answer your question, as such.  What I will do is 
tell you that I have been using a product called Smoothwall.  It is a 
specialised Linux distro (approx 22MB ISO) designed specifically to be a 
firewall and router.  It also has some other features that you can read about 
here.

The thing I liked most about it was the ease of setup.  It took me 17min to 
go from powering up the machine I was installing it on, to being dialed up to 
the 'net and "surfing" from another machine on my home network.
