[ Humbug *General* list - semi-serious discussions about Humbug and ]

[ Worthwhile understanding: http://www.humbug.org.au/netiquette.html ]
Hi All,
I recently reset my linux box and upon rebooting I received a strange
error msg flashing up with intervals of about 10 seconds causing the
screen to blank.
The msg read:
wintermute login: According to var/run/gdm.pid, gdm was already running
(867), but seems to have been murdered mysteriously.
Then after saying this 10 or so times it reads:
INIT: IO "X" respawing too fast. Disabled for 5 minutes.
Ive jumped online from another box searching for answers but I am
completely lost. Im guessing the .pid stands for some sort of process
id.? Any clues would be fanstastic.
Cheers,
Conor
