Hello All,
I run an eight machine network for a local businessman. He has an ADSL
link to the outside world running through an XP Pro box. The other eight
machines are Windows 98/XP. To put it bluntly I am fed up with the shite
performance of the XP pro box as the gateway and would like to put in
it's place a Linux /commercial router (depending on costs).
If I was to go with the Linux option I would like to be able to have a
mail program of some description that can download up to 25 POP3
accounts from powerup and then, let the clients access the Linux box as
the mail server.
The reason behind this is that they suffer from a serious virus problem
and no matter how many
times I try to educate the users they just continue with their old ways.
I would also like to have a proxy server, most likely squid running
aswell. However, I do not want SQUID to cache certain pages, i.e their
website which is all dynamic and needs to be a fresh copy of the page
everytime you hit it.
Question 1. Is the above setup viable and reasonably easy for a moderate
linux user to setup. (Reasonalbe understanding of routing, SMTP, POP etc).
Question 2. Is their a commercially available router which could do much
the same for a moderate price? Anywhere from $500 -$1000.
Any help would be much appreciated.
