[H-GEN] debian/sparc lost root password

hi,

i've just acquired a sparcstation 5 with debian linux installed on it, but
guess what, unknown root password and unknown passwords for other accounts
on it. is there any way that i could over-ride this password? i tried cat
/dev/null > /etc/passwd from the silo prompt, but it seems that silo does
not redirect output.

there is no floppy or cdrom in this sparcstation.

any help appreciated.
