I've seen this exact thing, and I fixed it by using the clampmss option.
The following line is the one which does the trick for me.

[/etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider]
pty "pppoe -I eth0 -T 80 -m 1412"

I'd love to be of more assistance, but that is all I had to do to fix the
problem you describe.
