Hi Christopher,
my understanding of all this GST stuff, is that if you provide a
service, and do not have an ABN, then the customer is required to withhold some
49% in tax, which they pay as part of their GST, and you can claim at tax time.
Now I know you can get an ABN without registering for GST, so you don't have to
charge GST at the time, and I think this applies to mainly under $50k a year
turn-over. I had previously an ABN and registered for GST, but found it a bit of
a pain, had to do quarterly statements, work out tax, etc, which you will still
have to do anyway. My personal opinion is that the GST requirements makes it
preferable for people to cheat the tax system, its just easier.

I think the best person to tell you is an accountant, because it will depend on
how much you do during the year, also there are deductions and GST input credits
you will most likely be able to claim for.

cheers

Johann
