I just had 4 ssh sessions to my gateway killed (not all at once, in a row).
I hooked up a monitor and found that there was only 6 meg of memory free!!!
I'm pretty sure I know what the cause of the problem is (gdm keeps crashing
and respawning) but is there a way to clear memory without rebooting? The
offending process insists it's not running, and top shows me nothing that's
using so much memory.
Also, I'm trying to reboot the computer at the moment, and it seems to be
taking a LONG time to deactivate the swap space. And whoops it keeps
killing processes as it tries to shutdown :-( Time to hit the reset button
and sit through a lengthy fsck by the looks of it.
I managed to remove the link in /etc/rc2.d that starts gdm, so hopefully it
won't come up on startup and i'll be able to actually run apt-get remove
gdm without the system killing the process.
Sorry this is so rambling, but I'm actually rather frightened as this has
never happened before. Fortunately it looks like everything has come back
up normally and the fsck didn't need to fix anything. (*PHEW*)
Sandra.
