This reminds me of a story from a friend of mine; he recompiled POVRAY
(which was running on a labful of linux and windows boxes) with some
whiz-bang new compiler from Intel (available for linux only,
apparently).

This new compiler had one particular feature---of course he turned
them all on---which enabled peephole optimisation at link-time.
Compiles, links, runs, looks faster.  Great!

Well, he won a 20% decrease in the amount of time to wait for the
final product, but that didn't do much good since the rendered scene
came out in a lovely shade of pink...
