Let's be specific, with situation that gave rise to this question. Consider
a case where the only change is that exactly one module (RTC) has been
specified to be built as a module, rather than compiled into the kernel.
Suppose you have only just built the kernel with RTC built in, and you now
want to rebuild with RTC as a module. You use make xconfig to specify this.

(1) What is the minimum that must be done subsequently for the kernel to be
reliable?
(2) What documentation would you consult to convince yourself that any
suggested process is correct? (apart from the source)

Thanks
