I'm am trying to solve some printing problems in a network of win98
(office97/2k) clients that has a linux box doing most of the network
services. This includes samba and a print server[1] using 5 HP LJ
printers located on two network print servers. There is an NT
(client) box there that I used to manually install the relevant
printer drivers onto the samba server's print$ share -- the clients
now have their printer drivers given to them automatically (nice,
and they are now all using a common updated set of drivers).
To cut a long story stort, is there any (freely available) software
that will give an NT box functionality as, and to use, unix LPD
(port 515) network printing? I'd like it to send its own print jobs
directly to the print servers and the linux box's printer port, but
NT can't do that (not without lpd, ipx, or an IP-based network print
server port driver - if such a beast exists). I'm aware of the SFU
(services for unix) kit for NT, but I don't have access to that...
Thanks for any help.
Cheers
Tony
[1] I am very impressed how much samba's PDC functionality has
improved since 2.0, I'm also using it quite happily with LDAP.
