After much research and confusion I am here to ask what may sound like dumb
questions.
What I want to do is have the local linux box as the mail server for the local network.
I want to setup an IMAP server so the mail is kept on the server, so when
people have their laptop stolen the mail doesn't go with it.
I want the linux box to be a server to the local network but as a client to the ISP mail
servers. These boxes are usually connected via dial-up and won't be accessed by the
Internet at large. The domain is being hosted already and won't be changed.
So far I have worked out:
Fetchmail to go out and get their mail.
procmail and spam assassin to sort their mail.
sendmail to forward the mail from the linux box to the ISP SMTP servers.
The problems I am having is what program do I need to setup on the server so that
the workstations can access mail using IMAP?
What program to I use to act as a SMTP server for the local clients.
The other thing to consider is how do I configure these so that it works something like this
1. Domain is configured to be xxxx.bogus
2. Local user 1 (LU1) sends mail to LU2 - mail server just passes it straight over to LU2
3. LU1 sends mail to external address - mail server changes addresses (from and reply to)
from LU1 at xxxx.bogus to LU1 at xxxx.com.au
