I have tried so manythings that it is all starting to descend into a grey
mist. One thing you could perhaps answer for me is why does there seem to be
no -detach switch with pppd with RH7.2 . I have looked at the man page and
there is a nodetach option. Does this mean that detach is the default
behaviour? Surely this means that I can't supply it on the command line as
suggested or the binary won't start?

I think my main problems arise because I am also using the box to dial out.
Anytime I use the values that are suggested in the various book that I have
read, my dial out goes haywire. I know I can use a different file
containing options when I call pppd using mgetty but what about the ip-up etc
scripts? Are they the same for both directions?

What started out with me believing it would be a relatively simple exercise,
has opened a can of worms, and lo and behold each of the little b's is
holding his own can asking for it to be opened!!!

Maybe it is time to go with a simpler??? option. Where can I find
information about using getty_ps to monitor the serial port ? Will it handle
the authentication? Should I then create an alias (ppp) for pppd? From the
logs at the other end that is what is being sent and I read that this is what
to do. Can I then use a file for the command line options for pppd
containing:

asyncmap 0
netmask 255.255.255.0
proxyarp
lock
crtscts
modem

I am still a little grey on how the other end obtains an IP address. Is that
the 192.168.0.6:192.168.0.7 command line option. I only have one modem so
static addresses are not a problem. Should they be different from the
current IP's of the box's as the address I was previously using caused a
message, " Peer not authorized to use address 192.168.0.5." This is is
normal address. Which brings me back to the routing question. Any specific
setup there?

I think this may be my hangup at the moment as I get a message in the logs
(which I can't currently find) saying unable to resolve address but I am not
sure if this is coming from the remote end or from my box. Or is this to do
with the proxyarp option because I did not have that set.

Many questions I know. I will be making another attempt to sort out the
problems tomorrow night. I will supply copies of the logs if the problems
still arise after trying the above settings. Meanwhile any suggestions
arising from the ramble above (apart from cutting down the rambling :~) )
would be greatly appreciated as the guy that is doing the dialin is becoming
a major creditor to Telstra!!!

Cheers,

Scott.
