Maybe Mandrake is the way to go. The latest distribution has the ease of an 
MS style OS to install and detect most everything you could want 
hardwarewise. Just a thought, it is very much prewritten scripts, you 
change things with utilities (that go and rewrite the scripts) Mandrake is 
based on Redhat, but different. Use this until happy with playing serious 
scripts then change or at least until confident with the concept of Linux.
