I found that most recruitment firms don't advertise the majority of their
jobs.  They pick out a couple, and advertise them.  They then just use
these as their hook to get you onto their books.  They will probably
suggest half a dozen current positions to you, but the one you actually
applied for will almost never be one of them (I've occasionally suspected
that the advertised position was already filled... I know of at least
one occasion when it was).

There's no need to, unless you're contracting.  I don't know if they do
even then, but they ought to, because by definition you will be back for
more business further down the track.

I found that there seems to be quite a lot of work out there for embedded
systems, or anything that works closely with hardware.  If you specialise
in scripting languages or databases then there doesn't seem to be as much.
