actually it did used to be a vfat partition on hdb. i used partition magic
6 to repartition it, but deleted all that and re-did it in the linux
installer. It never occurred to me that windows would have some sort of
record of what partitions/drives it had previously and would forcefully go
looking for the partition. However, i also had a vfat partition on hdb that
windows refused to see.

I've now chucked the entire lot. I've moved windows to hdb which is now a
single partition. I installed SP3 for simplicity (I wouldn't have to trawl
through the updates list and reboot 15 times to get them all installed) I'm
about to (read: when i stop being lazy) reinstall linux on hda, although I
wonder if I should delete the partition, reboot with the empty space to get
windows to rewrite whatever partition table it's keeping, and THEN install
linux.

I'm curious as to whether this is a win2k only occurrence, or whether it
occurs on machines with the same set of circumstances running winxp. (I'd
rather not test that out however)

Sandra. (really apologetic about sending M$ stuff to the list, but this may
help ppl in the long run)
