Start it after networking. That's the only rule I've ever followed and 
never had any trouble with it.

As for the rc stuff, I just hack away at it and get it to my liking. I'm 
sure the way I do it isn't recommended, but then a caffiene intake as high 
as mine isn't recommended either ;-) I'm sure there are tools to do this 
sort of thing, but I'm too impatient to find all that out. I moved from 
redhat to debian to get away from them ;-) [No that was not a dig at 
redhat/mandrake/suse/slackware users nor at users of any other distribution]
