Well what I do between my reader and IMAP is normally local, so nothing
special done there.

Some of my POP pickups (with fetchmail) are done through SSH. One could
do IMAP access in a similar fashion.
You can either create a tunnel for the ports, or start a new SSH
connection that runs the desired process directly (in the latter case,
which I use for POP, ipopd is run and then actually connected straight
to the SSH link instead of going through local ports - making sense
here? ;-).
