I use SSH to connect to a Washington IMAP daemon.
Basically there's a way (rtfm) to run imapd "pre-authenticated". So
if you have SSH set up (eg. with ssh-agent) to allow you to log into (or
at least execute imapd on) the host containing the IMAP daemon, then
you can get single-sign-on secure access to your mail folders.
This requires your MUA to be sufficiently configurable to allow you to
slot SSH into the picture. (I use Emacs Gnus, which takes
'sufficiently configurable' to its ultimate extreme).
