Well, it would make things easier if you were using software that put
in a References: header so everyone could tell what you were replying
to.

Right.  The only other person who posted in HTML in that thread was
Rick Phillips; I'd say you replied to him and Outlook cleverly decided
to send your reply in HTML, too.

Well, that's what you get for using proprietary software, I suppose.
