Just thought I'd let those interested know the following.
Arrived in the office this morning to a complaint about Samba on the Solaris
box. As part of the initial investigation I used ps to check what processes
were running. At that point I noticed two (2) instances of sendmail running,
one since the last reboot (as expected) and the other since early February.
(I'm going to have to have 'words' with the three other people who have root
access to this box.)
After fixing the original problem, I used the /etc/init.d/sendmail script to
stop both instances and restart one only. The alias now works exactly as I
had expected it to from the beginning. I'm now guessing that since the
second instance was started, all updates to the aliases files have not been
found. I'm also surprised no email problems were reported by the people who
use this server.
Thanks to those who offered assistance on this.
