Indeed.  A broken .cf will cause all manner of unexpected results.

This type of format is usually used as a special directive to sendmail to
move or munge mail appropriately (eg, .UUCP).

As Tony mentions later .REDIRECT comes to mind.

Ewan, is there a reason this directive is being used?  You might like to
post the .mc (blotting out any sensitive info).

Something like this would normally turn up as a result of a
misconfiguration (local-host-names incorrect, etc).

A quick RTFM revealed little about the possible origin of the .DIRECT 
directive.
