from a functionality point of view, probably not terribly much but from a
security patch upgrade...well if this is really important to you it may be
critical.

Well Mandrake 8.2 has a small install but Mandrake is now optimised for 586
boxes so maybe it might not be your best option. I imagine you actually can
do an install on a 486 but have never tried it? I am sure someone could
guide you towards a very small Debian or Red Hat or some other install. The
real "value" (might not be totally accepted as value by all) in Mandrake is
the ease of install, KDE base, Windows-ish ease of operation for newbies,
couldn't care less about brand name installers. If you are going to take
advantage of all that maybe a 500 Mb disk is not what you ought to be
looking at...do you really want hundreds (thousands maybe?) of Mb of X
Windows stuff. If not maybe another distro might be a better choice. should
be no shortage of advice as to installing a minimalist Debian system in
300-400 Mb. Certainly if you want a small, highly stable and highly secure
box for a router or some such, then maybe a Debian install would be better.
Mandrake does not have a reputation for being conservative in relation to
stability...their position in the market seems to be more aimed a slick
installs, latest version programmes, GUI types. Which is sort of the
antithesis of the staid, conservative, high reliability server position that
might be occupied by Debian or Slackware or some of the specialist server
packages.

Just a thought
