Thanks for the info.
One problem, in the rescue mode that I am in, which I got from the install
CD, when I type lilo I get:
/etc/lilo.conf: no such file or directory
I am able to see my lilo.conf in /mnt/etc/lilo.conf
The top part looks like:
boot=/dev/hda6 (for some reason my partitions are /dev/hda1 for win and
hda6 for linux)
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
vga=normal
default=windows (my girlfriend made me do that)
keytable=/boot/us.kit
lba32
prompt
nowarn
timeout=50
message=/boot/message
menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw (this one I am not too sure about)
ignore-table
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-6mdk
label=old)_linux
root=/dev/hda6
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.18-6mdk.img
append="devfs=mount"
read-only
...Theres more
(typed the above by hand as the floppy doesnt work in this mode)
What is menu-scheme? On a previous upgrade it had little smiley faces
where the lilo prompt was, those iddn't look normal.
Things are now not as bad as I once thought. I can now see bot hsides of
my disk, win and linux.
At the end of the install of both 8.1 and 8.2 I was given a choice of
either grub, lilo with graphics or lilo with text (that last one is the
one I picked).
Thanks very much for any advice.
Jimmy
