The main problem here is that the XP version of NTFS seems to vary somewhat
from the Win2000 version of NTFS. We have been forced to buy the latest
version of Partition Magic just to be able to work with the XP version NTFS.
Even when run under DOS, version 6 of PM reports file system errors whereas
version 7 does not. This is what has lead us to believe that there are now
2 "flavours" of NTFS. We also tried getting Mandrake 8.1 to read the XP
NTFS volume and experienced similar problems to what has been described
here. The advice below is good advise - wait until Linux has caught up with
NTFS mark 2. Apart from that you can only read NOT WRITE to NTFS anyway.

Get yourself into Win 2000 if you must and forget XP for the time being. We
have uninstalled a lot of XP and replaced it with Win2000. Win2000 is
mature - XP is not.

Rick Phillips

Don't even *think* about mounting NTFS volumes under Linux - even read
only access can cause major filesystem corruption that the Windows fsck
tools refuse to fix.

Just Don't Do It. I'm not kidding here.

For this, you can blame Microsoft and their endearing habit of changing
specs without appropriate documentation.
