Yes, true.  I should mention the only printer I've used ghostscript
with was a nasty old dot matrix that didn't really give me any other
options.

The problem with ghostscript is that it's only software, and it plays
catch-up in a major way.  When I looked a few months ago, I simply
couldn't find a driver for the HP2500CM.  It is essentially a very
expensive printer that is not being used at even close to its full
potential.

Hell, *Windows* does a better job printing to it than Unix!

Yep, but I firmly believe printers are probably *the* worst sort of
hardware to deal with bar none[1].  I may be a sysadmin, but sometimes
I do enjoy a life free of unnecessary complication.

[1] : I mean, come *on*.  When the kernel has a special message for
      `the device told me about an error but I'm not sure what it
      means' you *know* you are in trouble.
