I've managed to get mgetty configured with auto-ppp in the past. I initially 
had trouble too, as I downloaded the mgetty package, ran ./configure ; make 
and then proceeded to try to configure the configuration files etc. I later 
discovered that auto-ppp is not compiled in by default and you have to edit a 
header file or something to make sure AUTO_PPP is defined and then recompile 
mgetty. Hope this helps you.
