Hi all.  I just thought I'd throw out an update.  It looks like the
problems we're experiencing are due to a kernel bug.  The box is running a
stock standard RH 7 kernel (2.4.2.redhat patch level).  Anyway, after
checking deja I found 1 person with similar problems.  Looks like the good
ol' kernel upgrade is the answer (currently untested).

Reviewing our notes we found trhe behaviour was changing over time while
the system was running.
