You must have one end with digital equipment to support a 56K connections.
Two standard analogue modems will only connect at 33.6k over PSTN. A number
of internal Hybrid cards eg Digi/Multitech are available that support 2/4/8
ISDN/V.90 Dial-up. With these hybrid units you can establish V.90
connections. The Hybrid card connects via an ISDN (Digital) line and are
relatively expensive, other end can be digital or analogue. We have used
the Multitech (MultimodemISI) product and it has Linux drivers.
Another alternative is to use DOV with ISDN, this requires both sides to
have ISDN and requires one site to be residential for the billing. Also
cost wise the residential side would have to make all the calls.
(http://www.traverse.com.au/Australia/html/dov.html) DOV allows 64K/128K
connections at the same costs as 56k dial-up. Again Linux driver ISDN DOV
support is available for the Traverse product.
Hope this helps.
