This message has been forwarded from a non-member-submission bounce.
More details from me are at the bottom. I forwarded Chris's message
because (a) I felt in the mood; (b) I thought Chris's message was
interesting and timely; (c) I wanted to talk to the membership about
mailing lists; and (d) because Chris uses Gnus, the mail client of the
rich and famous.
More below.

Subject: A thought on membership and meeting quorum

I am not a current HUMBUG member. I was founding VP of the group, but
have not renewed my membership for the simple reason that I have not
been able to make it to any meetings to do so.
What about a "non-voting" membership option, for members who are never
able to attend (or send proxies to) general meetings?
Alternatively, require a quorum of members who have registered to
vote. (and btw, are members who are ineligible to vote due to having
only joined recently subtracted from the membership numbers when
calculating quorum?).

Folks, to get your subscriptions in working order, send email to
majordomo at lists.humbug.org.au with the body
help
and nothing else. This is your guide to managing your subscription.
MOST PEOPLE CAN STOP READING HERE.
KEEP READING IF YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE MAILING LISTS.
Addresses that want to successfully send email to the HUMBUG mailing
lists must be subscribed to the list they're sending to, *or*, to
support people (like me) who want to be subscribed at only one address
but send mail from one or more other addresses, be subscribed to the
appropriate -post list.
For example, to send mail to general at lists.humbug.org.au, the address
that is *sending the email* must be subscribed to that address, *or*
the list general-post at lists.humbug.org.au. If you're at all unsure,
the easiest thing to do is simply send email to
majordomo at lists.humbug.org.au, with the text:
subscribe general-post
subscribe chat-post
and reply to the confirmation emails that come back. Do *NOT* supply
a third argument (an email address) to these commands. That's simply
asking for trouble.
When subscribing, please be aware that there is a small race
condition: if your email to subscribe to the list goes to (say)
caliburn, and you immediately send email to the list and it goes to
the other machine (zerlargal), then zerlargal will see your sender
address is not on the approved list, and bounce it. The bottom line
is this: *wait* for about an hour after subscribing before trying to
send anything.
THE VAST MAJORITY OF PEOPLE CAN STOP READING HERE.
READ ON IF YOU NEED EVEN _MORE_ INFORMATION.
For people wanting to get _off_ a list, send email to
majordomo at lists.humbug.org.au and put
which
as the only line in the body. Majordomo will send mail back, telling
you which lists the address the email is sent from is subscribed to.
It is also possible to send
which <string>
to majordomo, and it will reply with information about lists and
subscription addresses that contain the named string. (Please, let's
try to be a little ethical with this one, folks.)
If _anyone_ has _any_ questions about the list, send the query to
owner-<listname>@lists.humbug.org.au (ie, owner-general, or
owner-chat, and so on). I try to respond to messages sent in a timely
manner, but I'm not always able to do so.
If you've read all the way to here, kindly print out this message and
keep it near your computer for handy reference.
