For interest, we've just been slashdotted
<http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=00/11/09/1715248>, which solidly
flooded a 2Mbps link, generating multiple gigabytes of traffic since
last night. A well-configured 400Mhz Celeron Debian machine didn't
even murmur.
Availability is important, but for many (not all) sites performance is
not such an issue.
