Yeah, brilliant. Did you really need to post it back to the list
again? Did we all need to see what you forgot to post privately a
second time, to know what you were talking about?

Damn right.

[snip 80 lines of crap I've now downloaded and stored 3 times
already.]

Posters, *please* use some common sense when using the lists! As some
of you know, I get copies of the foo-owner messages---this includes
all the non-member submission bounces.

These are *silent* bounces. If you send mail to the list and don't
see it in a reasonable period, expect a semi-automated response from
me at some point. Only addresses subscribed to a list, or its
foo-post counterpart (general/general-post, for example) are allowed
to post to the lists! The simple formula for getting onto the HUMBUG
lists is:

$ echo "subscribe chat" | mail -s'sub me!' majordomo at lists.humbug.org.au

If you can't send mail to the lists and need to do so urgently, then
this will probably fix things:

$ echo "subscribe chat-post" | mail -s'I lose!' majordomo at lists.humbug.org.au

The number of people who cannot understand this is simply staggering.

Let's see. I've ranted about followups, and subscriptions, what else
is there? Ah yes, Jeopardy-Style posting. Unless you're on the
aforementioned gameshow, putting the answer before the question is
both useless and annoying---you lose context, and it's usually very
wasteful. (Bear in mind that poor form on a mailing list is really
equivalent to saying ``Since my time is *much* more important than
yours, I won't bother to take 30 seconds to make life easier for the
few/dozens/hundreds other people on this list''.)

One more thing:

     139: nnml:mail.humbug-owner

That box was *empty* two days ago. There are about a half-dozen
addresses subscribed to this list bouncing for one reason or another.
Some of the owners of these addresses are *back on the list* from
another address. *PLEASE* unsubscribe from the mailing lists _before_
you:

  * become employed by someone else
  * change service provider
  * go on holiday, ignore your mail and fill your inbox
  * etc etc etc.

All this mail is slowing down my being able to (a) get to *my* mail
and (b) get to *your* bounces. Whenever that mailbox gets too full I
simply purge it.
