I'm not sure of the method employed (don't have the box in front of me
right now), but SuSE usually waits about 5 minutes after booting and then
runs any cron jobs that were missed while the machine was down. e.g. the
nightly update of the locate database.

It's also sufficiently clever to ensure that if, for example, the machine
was down for 3 days, the daily jobs will only run once.
