no no no .... 

use sendmail as a relay daemon only.  Then it will only store the email
if the connection to your next host is down (ie the box is offline)

in your sendmail.cf line on the router put

DSsome.other.relay

and put in /etc/mail/access file the domains which you allow relay
access too.  

I think your timeout lines in your firewall rules need looking at though

as usual, lart me if I'm wrong
