[H-GEN] ppp failures

[ Humbug *General* list - semi-serious discussions about Humbug and
Unix-related topics. ]

Hi all,

Found my kernel problem. It seems that after about 2.2.7, SMP died
regularly when you had drives on more than one interface. Like my
system has...

Anyway, on a completely unrelated note, I was wondering if anyone had
heard of any problems with ppp? Until recently it was running OK for
me, but in the last couple of weeks I've found that it dies on me.

Basically, the modem is still connected, but no-one is home. ifconfig
tells me that ppp0 is there, but doing a ping to the machine at the
other end of the link doesn't do anything. I don't even get flashing on
the Tx light of the modem, so it definately looks like my problem.

It's fixed in the short term by doing a "ifdown ppp0; ifup ppp0".

Anyway, I've turned on debugging in ppp and set syslogd to accept it
(which is disabled by default in RH), but I don't see anything unusual.

Has anyone heard of anything like this? Suggestions as to where to
look?

TIA
