Not quite. The compression algorithm performed by the modem is not nearly as
good as a proper compression utility. Consider that the window used by the
modem is much smaller due to the size of it's buffers.

In a way there is another item to note and that is the amount of pure
bandwidth that is consumed: Some of us are charged per byte, and so
compressing the files is of use.

P.S. I found that IspMailGate which David Wood pointed out to me (thanks!)
has a module built in to compress files (and a stack of other nice utils,
check it out, search on CPAN)
