To add to my earlier comments:
In case it was vmware, I turned off all the vmware services. 5 minutes
later it crashed again, so I rebooted. A short while later it crashed
once more. So I know it's not vmware.

The second time it crashed as I was opening a gterm, so I got to see the
kernel panic:
confusion kernel: Kernel panic: Free list corrupted.

Ewww, yuck. Looks nasty. At a guess I'd say that the smp kernel is
having trouble with one of the two new peripherals I've compiled in.
Ne2000 is probably not the culprit here, since it's such a common
peripheral that I'd be surprised to hear that it wasn't being supported
properly under SMP. Besides, it only uses a single IRQ and a couple of
IO channels, so there's no real complexity to it.

That leaves sound... which uses io, dma, etc, etc. Much more likely to
be the problem. So I've removed it for the time being, and I'll see if
it crashes again. If it doesn't then I'll see about loading it as a
module - maybe that will be more stable..... if I can get the sound
module to work.
