[H-GEN] running windows?

[ Humbug *General* list - semi-serious discussions about Humbug and
Unix-related topics. ]

Well, I'm not really running windows, but the number of times this
machine has crashed is making me start to think that I am.

I found the other night that I wasn't loading my ne2k-pci module when
"/etc/rc.d/init.d/network start" was run (I'm on RH obviously). I ran
modprobe manually, but it didn't do anything (I'm not a real module
expert so maybe there was something else I should have done). All I
could think was that maybe the VMWare virtual network thingy that I have
recently loaded could be the culprit.

Strangely, when I did an init 3, one of the rc5.d/K* scripts (and I
couldn't find which one) loaded the ne2k-pci module successfuly while
shutting down!!! That's great, only I could find what did it, and I
can't just change to init 3 and back every time I start up :-)

Anyway, I decided to stop stuffing around and just put it in my kernel.
While I was at it I put my sound card in there as well. I don't know
why, but I have NEVER been able to get a sound card module to work, but
compiling it in has never failed for me. Sure enough, my network is now
fine, and sound works like a charm (isn't x11amp cool?)

So why am I writing? Well the stoopid thing crashes all the time!!! It
only seems to happen when there is some sort of user interaction. It
happened today when I was using ssh into the box, and it has happened on
numerous occasions while using I was actually at the console (3 times
tonight).

I don't know if it's my network, sound, vmware services (I'm not
actually running vmware when it happens), or just some combination of
the above with an smp kernel.

Has anyone heard of any problems with systems like I just described?
Should I be posting more info? Do you just want me to shut up and solve
my own d at mn problems? :-)
