have a look at the top of the XF86Config. For testing theories, it would be
possible to hash out all but the simplest font (say fixed 75dpi), and try
that.
Another source of trouble *might* be the interrupt used on your S3 card
(often IRQ 11) on PCI.

ah! enable/disable the mttr registers, and, make sure you leave extended vga
capabilites (experimental) on. I'm off my machine at moment and may have the
vga wording wrong, it's in that part of xconfig that talks about Amiga 4 bit
pixels and such, just leave them all as you see them.
In general, although you will get a boost from re-compiling to the correct
cpu, the remaining options tend to be modularised. All you are doing (in
effect) is saying don't bother compiling a scsi module for me. The fact that
you leave it alone and compile it doesn't matter at all because you simply
won't use it.
