generally the gui interface will do that for you (i don't know if there's
command line syntax to doit via modprobe, but it would be highly suspect and
specific to the whim of the particular driver's author)

Kde's kmixer uses ctrl- '1' to save settings for next bootup, and from
memory , gnome's Xmixer uses alt-'S' for same effect.
