[ Humbug *General* list - semi-serious discussions about Humbug and
Unix-related topics. ]
Hi,
A friend of mine wants a database to catalog his collection of stuff
in, as the machine has for the purpose is not enough to run an M$
operating system I will be doing it with a minimal linux install. I was
after peoples opinions as to whether to use Msql or Mysql, I have used
Msql before but thought some comparison might be in order. Essentially
the DB would have a web interface using a boa or apache server on the
machine so php or perl look like being used for cgi scripts. It also
dawned on me that it would be easier for admin purposes if this was his
dial-up box with a small masq/firewall setup on it, this way if he adds
more machines to his network (say for his wife) then they call all use
the web at once and I can login via ssh to fix any hiccups that develop
in my scripts. The problem with this is how to get the '95 box to
initiate a script on the linux box, I don't feel that Dial-on-Demand is
the right option here I think an icon on his dektop that when
double-clicked runs pon on the linux box would be a better option for
him....but how can I do this?
All help/ideas/useful critisism/intresting conversation greatfully
apreciated.
Nikolai
