you can force the geometry settings for a drive if necessary; in
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/ somewhere.

it may still use the BIOS to discover geometry settings to keep
compatibility with old [read: nooks's] hardware, the definitive answer is
in /usr/src/linux/drivers/block/ide.c or thereabouts. ;)
