Hi Guys,
You might want to investigate the regs regarding connection of AX25 packet
radio systems on the amateur band to the public internet. AFAIK (ie, last
time I looked into it) this is NOT allowed in Australia [1]. There is also
the issue of what sort of traffic is allowed to be sent over these bands.
There is a restriction placed on the use of amateur radio in that nothing of
a commercial nature may be transmitted, therefore, sending HUMBUG mailing
lists would be OK, but anything to do with your work would be breaking the
regs ( come to think of it, some of Frank's HUMBUG emails might break the
regs too!! 8^).
Obtaining a licence is not that hard, anyone with a smattering of
electronics knowledge should be able to pass. No need for morse code unless
you wish to use the HF bands, which limit you to about 1200 baud anyway. A
limited licence will give you access the VHF (2m) and UHF (70cm) bands,
which are suitable for the purposes. Obviously, the 70cm band gives a much
higher data rate capability, but the 2m band gives better distance.
Cheers

[1] There are however a few AX25<->internet gateways set up and running, but
I don't think they exist officially.

Yeah I know :)

If possible (ie lawful) it would be a good thing(tm). I personally would
prob not be sending anything too sensitive over the link, but others
might.
Cheers,
-Robert
