Stripping isn't to be undervalued, though.  I remember getting a whole
order of magnitude improvement after I compiled my own ghostscript by
stripping it.  (At the time I was *sure* the compiled binary was 15MB,
but these days I'm inclined to think it was merely 1.5MB.)

The original poster may also want to investigate using (or not using)
the various -O options to gcc.
