(Note reply-to: being general at humbug.org.au vs "Doug Young" <dougy at gargoyle.apana.org.au>)

The typical office user couldn't care less about technical stuff .....
despite the typical problems with Microsoft stuff, it still does work
acceptably well, is user friendly, there are adequate reasonably sorted
applications, and plenty of intelligible documentation ... which is a large
part of why Bill Gates is worth what he is and what has helped to make the
internet what it is today...... if there was no option except unix and its
ilk there would undoubtedly be a mere fraction of the number of PC's in the
world right now.

Whilst there is no question that unix based operating systems are far more
stable than, for example NT4 (well isn't EVERYTHING more stable than that
!!) they all have the problem of documentation ranging from non-existent to
extremely poor & totally unintelligible. The unix world has never done much
for the average front office user to whom computers are no more than a fancy
typewriter or fax machine ..... a good example of the reason why unix based
operating systems are not as ubiquitous as Microsoft / AppleMac in front
office applications is the totally insane "mount / unmount" nonsense .....
does anyone in their right mind seriously expect the average 16 year old
dollybird receptionist to use commands like that !!
