I know this is not what you wanted and the challenge is sometimes the source of
the thrill but it could be possible to get more memory ? What brand is the
laptop? A lot of 386 laptops are dying and the memory is often not
transferrable so it might be possible to get a reasonable upgrade.
Don't force it! Get a bigger hammer!
