Another suggestion to add to the heaps that have already flowed forth:

I'm using an AcerModem 56K to connect to UQ, Griffith, and Powerup. It
has a full-featured AT command set, and has not once caused me grief.
Unlike some other modems, internal and external, that I tried. With my
own eyes I have seen pppstats report ftp connections exceeding 10K
p/sec. 

I read somewhere in the Serial-HOWTO (I think) about modems with
Rockwell chipsets being not so well supported under Linux; my experience
would tend to support this.
