Why would I think that?  Probably because until the last day or so, that
seems to be EXACTLY what has been happening.  Pardon me for being stupid,
but if they were supposed to return a bogus name, why have they not been
doing this before?

As I did suggest.  I will extend my local zone to include the whole
10.0.0.0/8 subnet.
