Hi all,
You know, most DIP-style chips have a notch at one end. This notch
indicates the side of the chip that pin 1 is on. Sometimes a small
circular depression or a raised dot is used instead of a notch. Most chip
sockets have a matching notch, depression or dot to note which way a chip
should be installed.
If one were, say, to forget all of the above and presume that a given
socket is installed on a board in the same orientation as all of the other
chips (never a good idea), one might put a chip in upside down. If this
were done with (hypothetically) a bootp chip and a 3c509 card, not only
will the chip literally smoke, but it will toast the card as well.
Go ahead. Ask me how I know.
Grrrrr.
