Hmmmm. I've had the same problem with UQ. It was probably 12-18 months
ago.

What I would suggest trying is:

	* force your modem to a lower speed. Start at 9600 and see if that
	  works. If not, try 2400. If it does, work slowly up until you
	  find something what doesn't work.

	* switch to a different serial port

	* switch to a different device for the same serial port (/dev/cua
	  instead of devttyS or vice-versa)

	* switch from having ppp as a module, to compiling ppp into the
	  kernel. Or try running insmod ppp.o before up'ing your link.
	  (If you're already compiled into the kernel ignore this)

I can't actually remember what I ended up doing to fix this. It may be
on the lists somewhere, but I don't know.
